According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric vehicle (EV) sales in India witnessed a record surge in July 2026, recording the highest-ever monthly retail sales of 3,27,901 units. This figure represents an increase of over 66 percent compared to the same period last year, highlighting the rapidly growing shift towards electric mobility.
Approximately one out of every eight vehicles sold this month was an EV; this data reflects the rapid acceptance of electric vehicles across various segments of the Indian automobile market. FADA stated that the crisis in West Asia and the likelihood of rising global oil prices could further boost the demand for electric vehicles.
FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar noted that India recorded its highest-ever monthly EV retail sales in July 2026, with 327,901 units sold. This represents an increase of over 66 percent compared to the previous year, and approximately one out of every eight vehicles sold is now an electric vehicle.
Electric two-wheelers crossed the 2 lakh-unit mark for the first time. They accounted for 11.2% of total two-wheeler retail sales in July, up from 10.6% in June and 7.7% a year earlier. Electric three-wheelers also strengthened their position; their market share rose to 65.1%, compared to 62.7% in June and 60.3% in July 2025.
Giridhar said, “The share of commercial vehicles has nearly tripled to a record 3.57 percent—fleet electrification efforts have moved beyond pilot projects and have now reached the stage of purchase orders.” The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the commercial vehicle segment is steadily rising. In July, EVs accounted for 3.57 percent of total retail sales, up from 3.54 percent in June and 1.65 percent in the same month last year.
Sales of electric passenger vehicles have also seen a significant surge; retail sales rose by 83% year-on-year. Their market share remained steady at 7.9%—matching the figure from June but significantly higher than the 5.1% recorded in July 2025.
Finally, FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar stated that the massive surge in passenger EV sales demonstrates India’s rapid shift towards electric mobility. He noted that while supply constraints remain a challenge, the transition to EVs is no longer just a future prospect but has become a reality across the country.
