UP CM Yogi Adityanath Focuses on Boosting Weaver Income, Pushes Cluster-Based Development & Market Access

Yogi Adityanath has emphasized that ensuring the income, dignity, and livelihood stability of weavers is a top priority for the Uttar Pradesh government, calling for a comprehensive and practical strategy to address challenges in the sector.

Weavers Key to Economy, Not Just Tradition

During a review meeting of the weaver department, the Chief Minister stated:

  • Weavers are not just custodians of tradition
  • They are a strong pillar of the state’s economy

He stressed the need to protect both their economic interests and social respect.

Major Challenges Faced by Weavers

The government identified several key issues affecting the sector:

  • Rising cost of raw materials
  • Lack of modern design and technology
  • Limited market access

The CM noted that these challenges require systemic solutions, not just isolated schemes.

Cluster-Based Development Strategy

To strengthen the sector, the government plans to:

  • Develop cluster-based ecosystems in key weaving regions
  • Focus on:
    • Production
    • Quality control
    • Design innovation
    • Branding and packaging
    • Marketing

Sector Size and Contribution

Officials highlighted that:

  • Around 1.99 lakh weavers are engaged in the sector in Uttar Pradesh
  • The state ranks 6th in India in this segment

UP is a leader in:

  • Carpets, durries, and mats
  • Strong presence in bedsheets, furnishings, and blankets

In 2024–25:

  • India’s total handloom exports: ₹1,178.93 crore
  • UP’s contribution: ₹109.40 crore (9.27%)

Organising Weavers for Growth

The CM directed officials to:

  • Organize weavers into registered group units
  • Promote collective production and marketing
  • Provide access to:
    • Modern tools
    • Skill development programs

Focus on Design, Branding & Exports

He stressed:

  • Aligning products with market demand and modern design trends
  • Strengthening roles of designers and marketing experts
  • Enhancing linkages with export agencies

Digital & E-Commerce Push

The government plans to:

  • Connect weavers directly with customers via:
    • Digital platforms
    • E-commerce channels
  • Promote branding to increase visibility and income

Relief for Powerloom Weavers

Considering rising electricity costs:

  • The CM directed relief measures for powerloom weavers
  • Emphasized:
    • Reducing power costs
    • Promoting solar energy adoption for long-term savings
