PM Modi Pays Tribute to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on His 100th Birth Anniversary in Guwahati

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati on September 13, 2025, paying homage to the legendary singer, composer, and cultural icon of Assam and India.

In his address, PM Modi lauded Dr. Hazarika’s immense contributions to music, culture, and national integration, describing the day as “truly precious.” Highlighting Hazarika’s universal appeal, he quoted lines from the iconic song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe”, emphasizing the themes of humanity, unity, and harmony that the artist championed throughout his life.

The Prime Minister also highlighted efforts to promote Assamese culture and ensure Dr. Hazarika’s legacy reaches every household. “His work embodies the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat and continues to inspire generations,” PM Modi said. He pointed to initiatives like the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, as examples of the government’s commitment to the development of the Northeast region.

PM Modi stressed the importance of cultural connectivity in fostering national unity, advocating for the promotion of indigenous art, attire, cuisine, and handicrafts. He also urged citizens to embrace the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, encouraging pride in Swadeshi products and self-reliance, echoing Dr. Hazarika’s vision for India.

The event was attended by dignitaries including Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, among others.

PM Modi’s speech celebrated not only Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s cultural legacy but also his enduring message of unity, compassion, and national pride, reminding the nation of the role of arts and culture in strengthening India’s social fabric.
